Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Python installed?
Yes. Animo requires Python 3.9 or later. We recommend installing it via the official Python website or Homebrew on macOS. Animo will guide you through the setup on first launch.
What is Manim and do I need to install it separately?
Manim is the open-source animation engine that powers Animo. You'll need it installed. Animo will prompt you to install it automatically, or you can run `pip install manim` manually.
Do I need FFmpeg?
Yes. FFmpeg is required for rendering video output. On macOS you can install it with `brew install ffmpeg`. On Windows, download it from ffmpeg.org and add it to your PATH.
What AI providers does Animo support?
Animo works on top of OpenAI Codex, Claude Code, and OpenCode. If you already have an OpenAI or Anthropic subscription ($20/mo), you can use that at no extra AI cost. If you don't, you can pay through Animo instead.
Is Animo safe to install? I see a security warning.
On macOS, you may see a Gatekeeper warning because Animo is distributed outside the App Store. Right-click the app and select "Open" to bypass it. On Windows, SmartScreen may show a warning. Click "More info" then "Run anyway". We are working on code signing.
How do I update Animo?
Animo includes automatic update checking. When a new version is available, you'll see an in-app notification. You can also re-download the latest version from this page.
Can I use Animo offline?
The editor and Manim rendering work fully offline. However, AI-assisted animation generation requires an internet connection to communicate with your AI provider.
How big is the download?
Animo is only about 6 MB on macOS and 5 MB on Windows. Much smaller than Electron-based alternatives. All rendering happens natively on your machine.
Can I transfer my license to another computer?
Yes. Deactivate your license on the old machine from the app settings, then activate it on the new one. Your license works on one machine at a time.
What video formats does Animo export?
Animo exports MP4 videos (H.264). You can customize resolution and frame rate. Exported videos are ready to upload to YouTube, social media, or any platform.
Do I need to pay Animo for AI usage?
If you already have an OpenAI or Anthropic subscription (or get a student discount / free access), you don't pay us anything for AI. If you don't have one, you can pay through Animo instead. Once your license is made, we'll support any future updates.
